Busy weekend

What a busy weekend.

  • I finished installing the baseboards in the living room yesterday afternoon. Now all that’s left is the painting, and we’re likely to hire someone to do it.
  • Tammy and Jeremy managed to get all the junk from our backyard into the garbage bin our condo brought in for the weekend.
  • We trimmed our spruce tree in the back yard to let in more light and to be able to walk under it without stooping. All the removed branches also went into the waste bin.

Laminate Floors

Well, we finally got around to it. We installed laminate floors (from Ikea) in our living room last weekend. It looks really good. We went with the Hemse beech stave effect with a cardboard underlay. I wouldn’t use the cardboard underlay again, but would prefer to use the foam, and even to use two layers of foam. The cardboard was very scratchy to handle (gloves might have been a good choice) and generated a lot of fibre dust. The flooring itself was difficult to get started with. The first row was a cinch, but getting the second row attached was a real bear of a problem. Once the first two rows were done, the rest went fairly easily except when working around corners and the like. Then things got tricky, but not impossible. It took Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and evening and most of the day Sunday to do the job. Now all I have left to install is the baseboard around the room. That and call a painter to repaint the room.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Hope you all had a gobbling good time on the weekend. Tammy, Jeremy and I celebrated at Tammy’s parent’s house with a whole bunch of guests. We also celebrated Tammy’s dad’s birthday at the same time. As it was one of the big birthdays (ending in a zero) there were a lot of people there to celebrate with him. Unfortunately I forgot my camera at home so I don’t have any pictures to post with this entry.
Colin came over this weekend and we got the first half of the basement stairs railing installed. He’s coming back later this week to finish the job.
I am thankful that my basement is almost finished and that life is returning to normal following this summer’s flooding.

Basement almost finished

| October 1st, 2004 | Comments Off | Miscellaneous

We’re down to the finishing touches on our basement renovation following the July 11 flood. I won’t be tripping over as much stuff once those finishing touches are done. Our carpet is finally installed in the rec room as is most of the tile in the laundry room. We’re short about 15 tiles according to the installer. The replacement furniture from IKEA was delivered yesterday – now to assemble all 900+ pounds of it. My brother helped build the furniture for the rec room, and he’s returning tonight to finish that and build the shelving for the laundry room. Our new couch arrived yesterday as well. Once the furniture is assembled, the toys move downstairs, as do the contents of the spare bedroom which has been acting as a storage room since the flood. Hopefully the bulk of the work will be done before our Discovery Toys party on Saturday afternoon.
